Novak Djokovic has done things that most athletes could only dream of, and that is why his exploits have arguably transcended the sport.
A supremely gifted athlete technically, the way in which he has completely dedicated his life to tennis is another huge factor that has helped him become the best.
However, eventually, he will have to call time on his sparkling career.
It may not be imminent, but given his age and slight decline of late, it might be sooner than we think.
Fortunately, he has more than enough on his plate away from tennis to keep him busy.
Speaking to Sportal.blic, the Serbian was enlisted to answer all manner of questions about his career and beyond.
Naturally, Djokovic was asked who his tennis GOAT was, before then moving on to what his plans post-retirement might be.
He claimed: ‘There are many things. I am interested in many things.
‘I still want to learn to play the saxophone! To really learn. A few years ago I played decently for a while, but then I became bad because I didn’t practice enough and regularly. You have reminded me of that now. I would like to learn to sing, to play some instruments. Saxophone is number one, but I would like to learn to play the others as well. I would like to learn and act in the theatre, I love the theatre. Theatre above all, but I also like movies.
‘I prefer live interaction though. I love comedy and try to pick up some tricks from friends who are actors. I would like to start painting and drawing and making things. I’m also very passionate about things related to health, recovery. I’m interested in sports science, biotechnology… It’s a big list of things that I’m interested in, some of my investments are in those fields and I’m trying in different partnerships to develop brands.
‘My team and I try to bring everything together to make a group of strong brands. I would like to expand my brand beyond tennis, beyond philanthropy, into the world of business, wellness and more.’
Whilst he may be 37 years old, and retirement would make sense for most professional athletes of his age, Novak Djokovic is not like most people.
In fact, some might argue that what this 24-time Grand Slam champion has done is borderline superhuman, having nearly won all four majors in 2023, and continued to compete throughout 2024 despite a notable decline.
Andy Roddick praised Djokovic’s 2024, stating: ‘He was like this was my worst performing year for some time, it was bound to happen at some point, I’m still happy with my gold medal by the way. But let’s think about this just for a second.
‘His worst performing year ever he made the semi-finals of Australia, the finals of Wimbledon, won Olympic gold, finals of Masters 1000. That’s a career year for most of us.’
That sums up better than anyone could how Djokovic is far from finished.
