Saquon Barkley’s out-of-this-world backward hurdle in the Super Bowl LIX did more than just stun the spectators. It inspired the next generation of hurdlers.
Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love is one next-generation hurdler who can carry on Barkley’s backward hurdle legacy.
Interestingly, he plans on doing precisely so when the time is right.
“I most definitely at some point down the road will attempt (to do) a backwards hurdle, if the situation is right. But until then I’m going to stick to jumping over people the regular way,” Love said on NFL Network.
“I’m kind of a daredevil type of player. I’m willing to go out there and do anything. And seeing Saquon do the backwards hurdle, that really inspired me to go out on the field and try to play as free as I can. Shoot, that’s kind of where I got my motivation to continue the hurdling.
“Seeing him do it on the next level … that’s probably one of the greatest plays in football history I’ve ever seen. Seeing him do that, he plays my position … play as free as he does just gives me more motivation to be myself on the field.”
Love’s iconic hurdle against Northern Illinois became the Fighting Irish’s footnote entering the 2024 College Football Playoff.
“Maybe not in this game, but I’ve been thinking about a backward hurdle, a 360-hurdle. Whatever it may be. I just like showcasing my athleticism,” Love said earlier in January.
It is safe to say that the Notre Dame RB has made a solid reputation hurdling in college football and will likely remind Barkley of his hurdle whenever in the NFL.
