Sunday was a historic day for Notre Dame women’s basketball star Hannah Hidalgo, but not in a good way.
The sophomore sensation missed her first game of her Fighting Irish career as No. 3 Notre Dame took on Clemson. Hildago was seen pregame wearing a brace on her right ankle and not actively participating in warmups.
A Notre Dame spokesperson said in a statement, “She (Hidalgo) rolled her ankle late in the last game (against Wake Forest), and we just want to give her a bit of extra rest and make sure she’s 100% for the rest of the season.”
The CW Network broadcasters calling the game confirmed Hidalgo not playing was “precautionary.”
Hidalgo has made a strong case to win national player of the year honors this season. She is averaging 25.7 points, six rebounds, 3.7 assists and 4.1 steals per game, the latter of which is the best in the country. Standout performances against top-five foes in USC, Texas and UConn have also bolstered Hidalgo’s case for top players honors.
Notre Dame next plays Thursday at home against SMU.
