MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The 13th-ranked Washington and Lee University women’s golf team secured a fifth-place finish at the MCC Women’s Collegiate 36-hole tournament.
Marcella Mercer (74-72—146) jumped five spots on the leaderboard to finish 7th with a two-over-par score. She recorded eight birdies over the two days, including a strong start on Monday with two birdies and seven pars in the first nine holes.
The Generals posted a 303-294—597 (+21) scorecard, significantly improving from a 15-over first round to a six-over on the second.
Player Summaries
- Marcella Mercer led the team with a par second round, finishing 7th. Mercer made par on 20 holes and posted eight birdies across the two rounds.
- Alex Crews (73-75—148), in her debut collegiate tournament, was a key player for W&L and led the team after the first round, one-over-par. Crews finished tied for 14th with seven birdies.
- Laetitia Roegner (77-74—151) moved up to 20th place after improving her score by three strokes from the first to the second day. Roegner carded three birdies on Monday, despite not recording any on Sunday.
- Ella Wong (79-74—153) made a significant improvement on Monday, cutting five strokes off her score from day one, moving up five positions to 28th place.
- An Shelmire (81-74—155) had the biggest improvement, climbing seven spots to tie for 32nd. Her back nine was the strongest over the 36 holes with three birdies and only one bogey, finishing the final nine holes two-under-par.
- As an individual player, Julia Haetzel (77-73—150) rose three positions to 18th place, improving her score by four strokes in the second round. Haetzel finished six strokes over and carded five total birdies.
- Berkeley Bundy (74-78—152), competing as an individual, tallied three birdies and finished 23rd in her debut tournament for the Blue and White.
By the Numbers
No. 2 Emory (298-284—582, +6) won the event, followed by top-ranked Carnegie Mellon (+7), No. 17 Washington-St. Louis (+14), and No. 19 Mary Hardin-Baylor (+19) who led after the completion of the first round.
Piedmont’s Erin Donovan (66-70—136) took the individual title at -8, with Emory’s Zimo Li finishing second. Donovan’s 66 (-6) on Sunday was the lowest round of the tournament, and Emory’s second-round 284 (-4) was the only team score under par.
