Nick Kyrgios was delighted to make his return to tennis ahead of his play on home soil in Australia.
The 29-year-old announced he will make a competitive return at the Brisbane International before making his Grand Slam comeback at the Australian Open.
But to help prepare him for those events, Kyrgios took a trip to the United Arab Emirates to compete in the World Tennis League.
The relaxed nature of the exhibition event was an ideal scenario for the former World number 13 to ease himself back on to the circuit.
Nick Kyrgios was thrilled to be back on court following a long road back to full fitness.
The Australian had suffered serious wrist and knee injuries which restricted him to just one competitive singles match since the Japan Open in October 2022.
The World Tennis League offered Kyrgios a chance to play both singles and doubles once again.
He took Andrey Rublev in singles before teaming up with Olympic doubles champion Jasmine Paolini to face Caroline Garcia and Denis Shapovalov.
Following the contests Kyrgios posted a series of photos of him in action and expressed his gratitude after returning to doing what he loves.
He wrote on Instagram: “‘Don’t watch the clock; do what it does. Keep going.’ Never thought I’d play again after my wrist surgery, blessed.”
Kyrgios’ return to action with his doubles match alongside Paolini.
In the World Tennis League format matches are just a one-set shootout, and Kyrgios and his Italian partner defeated Shapovalov and Garcia 7-5.
However, Kyrgios was unable to keep his winning run going in his singles contest against World number eight Rublev.
He showed some signs of rust, especially on serve when he managed just two aces. Rublev, who won 73% of his first serve points, claimed a break of serve to go up 2-1 and never looked back.
No more breaks of serves occurred in the match and Rublev went on to secure a 6-4 victory.
