The tennis world is itching to see Nick Kyrgios lace up and return to professional tennis after two long years out with a wrist injury.
Kyrgios made the Wimbledon final in 2022 but missed the following two years with an injury that has proved so severe it threatened his career.
Kyrgios has shared an exchange with Novak Djokovic that prompted him to keep playing professionally and he will return at the Brisbane International.
Ahead of his return, Kyrgios has been discussing a number of factors about tennis in general and the state of the game in general.
It appears that if he was in charge of the sport for one day, things might start to look a little bit different, particularly at Grand Slam events.
The Aussie has been sorely missed on a tennis court and bets might start to gather over how long it will be on his return before he’s screaming at his box.
Kyrgios is a character and the game of tennis will welcome him back with open arms at the very end of this year and heading into 2025.
Earlier this week, Kyrgios was quizzed on what changes he would make to tennis in the current era and he’s picked fault with the length of matches at Grand Slam events.
He told The AO Show: “I would make Grand Slams best of three up until the quarter-finals. It would save us a lot of effort on scheduling. The first week’s scheduling gets out of control. I think with both the men’s side playing best of five and the women’s sometimes going long best of three, men’s matching aren’t finishing until like 2 or 3am. It’s not sustainable.
“If you made it best two out of three until the quarter-finals I think you would see some guys break through to the quarter-finals but the better players would end up winning anyway, best of five. That’s what I would immediately change with a Grand Slam.
“It would make it more exciting as well, as some of these top players lose a set in the early rounds and it’s right away back against the wall. How many times have we seen one of the best players in the draw lose a first set and think he is going to come back and win anyway? It’s actually boring.”
This claim is very interesting – but it makes a lot of sense when taken in context. So many players end up playing late at these events and having shorter matches would make a lot of sense.
It’s unlikely to change any time soon. Five set matches for the men is likely to remain with the women sticking to their three set affairs for the foreseeable.
Kyrgios does have some wild opinions though and with the purists this won’t sit well. Still, he won’t care one bit and will be hoping to ruffle more feathers when he returns to action.
The 29-year-old knows he can beat the very best players in tennis and he will want to return with a mission to get back towards being competitive in tournaments.
Kyrgios is one of the game’s great characters and hopefully, he can return with a bang when he laces up next month.
