Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis competed in the Australian Open doubles for the first time since they won the title back in 2022.
Having missed 18 months through injury, Kyrgios made his Grand Slam return in Melbourne earlier this week.
Kyrgios lost to Jacob Fearnley in the first round, having struggled with injury throughout.
After the match, the Aussie made a huge claim, as Kyrgios said he may never play singles at the Australian Open again.
He still had doubles to go, however, and prepared to play alongside his partner Thanasi Kokkinakis, whom he had won the title with three years ago.
Kokkinakis, who himself was struggling with injury was forced to retire during the second set, signaling an end to Kyrgios’ 2025 Australian Open campaign.
After the match, the 29-year-old revealed his plans for the rest of the year.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Kyrgios gave his thoughts on where his level is at currently.
“For me, obviously this year I’ve been out for a year and a half, two years, so I don’t know what this year’s going to bring,” he said.
“Obviously I’m going to trust the process, I think I’m hitting the ball great.
“I’ve still got a long way to get back to that same level I was in 2022.”
Kyrgios went on to say how long he thinks he’ll continue to compete in singles.
“For me personally, I couldn’t see myself playing more than probably this year high-level singles anymore,” he said.
“The maintenance, I think he [Thanasi Kokkinakis] knows, four, five hours on the treatment table every day to not even have the guarantee to be healthy to play a week of tennis.
“I think I’m weighing up my options.
“I can’t guarantee that I’ll be back here.”
Kyrgios did, however, say that there could well be a future for him in tennis, playing doubles.
“I think we, on full potential and full health, could do some damage in the doubles always,” he said.
“Doubles is a bit easier on the body, I think we can still play amazing doubles.
“We just have a good feel for the game of doubles together, I think we play very similar, we like to do the same things.
“I’m sure we’ll play together [again] at some stage.”
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis shocked the tennis world by taking home the Australian Open doubles title back in 2022.
Kyrgios has suggested that 2025 may be his last year competing in singles action, but he’ll hope to try and get one last win before then.
The Australian star last won a match at the Japan Open back in 2022, when he took down Pole Kamil Majchrzak, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
833 days later, Kyrgios has played just three singles matches on the ATP Tour, losing all three.
The closest the former world number 13 came to winning a match was at the Brisbane International earlier this month when Kyrgios lost to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a third-set tiebreaker.
Kyrgios’ schedule for the rest of 2025 is unknown, although the Aussie did recently say that he plans to ‘make some noise’ at Wimbledon later this year.
The 29-year-old reached the final at SW19 during his last appearance at the event, as he came up short against Novak Djokovic in four sets.
Only time will tell if we will see Kyrgios in singles action before then, as he looks to pick up a few more wins before he calls it quits.
