Pete Dougherty, Dominique Yates assess Green Bay Packers loss to Eagles
Pete Dougherty is joined by Dominique Yates to recap the Green Bay Packers’ 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil.
When Jordan Love fell to the ground and couldn’t get up on his own in the closing seconds of the Green Bay Packers’ 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday night in the Week 1 game, fans feared the worst.
They likely can sleep a little better tonight after early reports indicate that Love’s knee injury won’t end his season. Love, however, is still expected to miss time after injuring his MCL, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero says an “initial timetable for return is in the 3-6 week range.”
It’s still a crushing blow for Love, who signed a massive new contract during training camp, and the Packers, a team that entered the season with lofty expectations. Now, they’ll have to turn to a backup quarterback for the foreseeable future, drastically changing the early part of the season.
But the fact that it wasn’t worse — like an ACL tear — based on how it first looked, everyone at 1265 Lombardi Avenue has to be breathing a bit of a sigh of relief knowing that Love should return at some point.
Jordan Love knee injury: What it means and what some options are for the Green Bay Packers
Love returned to Green Bay with the Packers on Saturday after a 10-hour flight home. He walked gingerly down the steps from the airplane.
Former NFL player Emmanuel Acho, now an analyst for FOX Sports, offered his perspective on X, formerly Twitter, to the update.
Football fans, in general, are grateful that Love’s injury wasn’t worse and are wishing him well in his recovery.
Love was injured when he was tackled in the final seconds of the Packers’ Week 1 game against the Eagles on Friday in Brazil. It happened on the second play of the drive. Down by five points with no timeouts, the Packers were frantically trying for a game-winning score.
The drive started at their own 16-yard line with 22 seconds left. On the first play, Love completed a 33-yard pass to Jayden Reed to get near midfield with 15 seconds left.
On the next play, Love stepped up into the pocket and tried to get away from two defenders in an attempt to make something happen. That’s when Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter grabbed ahold of Love’s left knee before the Packers quarterback was taken down by linebacker Josh Sweat.
Before going down, Love flipped the ball back to running back Josh Jacobs, who ran 4 yards out of bounds with 6 seconds left. Love stayed down in pain and needed help to get off the field.
With Love expected to be out for multiple weeks, who will start for the Packers at quarterback?
Malik Willis, who was Love’s backup on the depth chart for Week 1, took the final two snaps in the closing seconds against the Eagles. He threw an incompletion on his first throw and was sacked on the last play of the game.
The Packers acquired Willis in a trade with the Tennessee Titans at the end of training camp a day before they cut quarterbacks Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt.
Clifford, a second-year player from Penn State, was signed back to the practice squad. He was Love’s backup in 2023 but he had an underwhelming training camp in his bid to back up Love again. Could general manager Brian Gutekunst sign a veteran quarterback as he waits for Love to return?
