The Green Bay Packers reportedly aren’t interested in trading wide receiver Romeo Doubs in the wake of the decision to suspend him for the team’s game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, teams reach out to the Packers to inquire about Doubs’ availability this week, but they were rebuffed.
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Packers placed Doubs on the reserve/suspended list on Saturday for conduct detrimental to the team, meaning he will not play in Week 5.
Pelissero also posted Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst’s statement on the matter:
“Unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to suspend Romeo for this week’s game. His decisions and actions during the week negatively impacted the team and required us to take this action. While we are certainly disappointed, we are confident that we will be able to move forward in a positive manner. Romeo is a valuable member of our team and we look forward to welcoming him back next week.”
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the suspension came after Doubs missed two practices this week, but “there’s an expectation things have moved in a positive direction and he will rejoin the team next week.”
The 24-year-old Doubs is in the midst of his third NFL season after the Packers selected him in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft out of Nevada.
Doubs has started all four games this season, recording 12 receptions for 169 yards and no touchdowns. He is second on the team in both catches and receiving yardage behind Jayden Reed.
In his rookie season, Doubs carved out a fairly significant role for himself on the heels of the Packers trading No. 1 wideout Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders.
With future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers throwing him passes, Doubs had a solid debut campaign with 42 grabs for 425 yards and three touchdowns.
The Packers decided to trade Rodgers to the New York Jets prior to the 2023 season and transitioned to Jordan Love as the starter. That decision paid dividends, as Green Bay reached the playoffs and won a postseason game.
Doubs started 16 of the 17 games he appeared in last season, setting career highs with 59 receptions for 674 yards and eight touchdowns. He ranked second to Reed in both catches and receiving yards and tied with Reed for the team lead in touchdown catches.
He also had 10 catches for 234 yards and a score in only two playoff games last season, speaking to his rapport with Love.
The Packers returned their top four receivers from last season for the 2024 season, and the expectation was that Doubs, Reed, Christian Watson and Dontayvion Wicks would form one of the deepest and most diverse receiving corps in the league.
Green Bay’s passing attack has been uneven so far, though, due largely to the fact that Love suffered a knee injury in Week 1 and backup Malik Willis started the next two games.
However, Love returned to the lineup last week, and the Pack are now in line to have one of the NFL’s top passing offenses for the rest of the season.
Even so, Green Bay could have some issues in that regard against the Rams since the team will be shorthanded at wide receiver.
In addition to Doubs being suspended, Watson is doubtful to play because of an ankle injury suffered last week.
Reed and Wicks are in line to be the Packers’ top two wideouts on Sunday with Bo Melton and Malik Heath seeing significantly increased roles.
