Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young has received trade interest from “several teams” amid his benching ahead of Week 3, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
“The Panthers have been contacted by certain teams, according to league sources, while other teams have mulled a Young trade within their own organizations,” Schefter wrote.
According to Schefter, the Panthers “do not intend to trade” Young.
Head coach Dave Canales announced on Monday that the No. 1 pick of the 2023 NFL draft would be benched after leading the Panthers to an 0-2 start to the season.
Andy Dalton will start against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday in place of Young, who completed 55.4 percent of his passes for 245 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions through the first two games of the season.
It was an uninspiring start to Young’s second season after his struggles during his 2-14 rookie campaign with Carolina, when he passed for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
The Panthers hired Canales as head coach this offseason in part of his prior experience helping quarterbacks reinvigorate their careers.
Despite his experience leading struggling signal callers including Baker Mayfield, Geno Smith and Russell Wilson to later success, Canales decided to give Dalton the start this weekend after watching Young’s Week 2 tape, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
ESPN’s Dave Newton recently reported that a Panthers source believes the team will “in time” return Young to the lineup, “maybe even this season.” Canales meanwhile said on Wednesday that trading Young is “not really something we’re really considering.”
However, according to Schefter, “sources around the league believe it is only a matter of time before Carolina actually does complete a deal involving the second-year quarterback— with the most likely time coming at some point in the offseason.”
At that point Young would be heading into his age-24 season, with two years and a club option remaining on his rookie contract.
The Panthers gave up their 2024 first-round pick and the right to draft Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams in order to select Young. Whatever trade value Young holds now is certainly currently less than that, but Carolina would still likely seek to recoup as many future assets as possible if the team does end up considering a trade.
