NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes has been fined more than $14,000 for a “violent gesture” during a game against the Buffalo Bills.
CBS reports the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback will have to pay $14,069 for unsportsmanlike conduct after he celebrated a touchdown pass by pretending to shoot a gun or rifle with his hands during the fourth quarter of the Nov. 17 game at Orchard Park. The Bills won the game, 30-21, ending the Chiefs’ hopes of a perfect season.
“To protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity, the NFL and NFL Players Association have agreed on a set of game-related rules violations that may result in accountability measures,” the NFL said on its website documenting fines against players, citing Mahomes for “Unsportsmanlike Conduct (violent gesture).”
WIVB reports the NFL has been cracking down on gestures involving guns, penalizing at least five other stars for similar actions during the first six weeks of the season.
“We don’t think it’s appropriate in those circumstances and sends the wrong messages,” Goodell said in October, calling it a long-standing league policy. “So, we’ll continue to do that.”
According to NBC, Mahomes was previously fined $50,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct for “verbally abusing” officials during a December game against the Bills. The Chiefs lost that game, too.
Mahomes did not comment on the new fine, but in December he said he accepted the consequences of that fine and vowed to “learn from it.”
Mahomes is a six-time Pro Bowl selection who has won three Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs and has been named the league’s MVP twice. The Chiefs currently lead the AFC with a 10-1 record and could meet the Bills (9-2) again in the playoffs.
