Days after Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson went off in a locker room rant that the hit last Sunday on teammate Devonta Smith was a “cheap shot,” the NFL has essentially agreed.
On Friday, the NFL fined New Orleans Saints rookie defensive tackle Khristian Boyd $4,600 for his high, blindside hit that knocked off Smith’s helmet and sent him into concussion protocol, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

At the time of the hit, Smith was being wrapped up by several other Saints defenders as Boyd rammed full speed into him from behind. The play was not penalized.
“Man, that’s the dirtiest s— I ever saw in football, bro,” Gardner-Johnson said Sunday, per ESPN. “Y’all obviously saw forward progression was stopped. For them to take a cheap shot on one of our key players, it goes to show what type of team that is. They’re front-runners.”
Smith and fellow receiver A.J. Brown (hamstring) have not practiced all week as the team travels to Tampa Bay for Sunday’s 1 p.m. game against the Buccaneers.
Gardner-Johnson was also fined an undisclosed amount for his hit on Saints running back Alvin Kamara, according to Pro Football Talk, the second game in a row the outspoken safety was fined.
