NFL teams haven’t been too upset by the current bye week format as the league potentially looks towards expanding to an 18-game schedule, according to Mike Sando of The Athletic.
“I’m fine with the current setup and haven’t heard teams complaining too loudly,” Sando wrote on Saturday. “The second bye makes sense once the schedules lengthen by another game.”
For the 2024 season, bye weeks have been given to teams since Week 5 and will run through Week 14. The Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots and Washington Commanders will be the final teams to receive a bye this year.
With the schedule length increasing from 16 to 17 games in 2021 and conversation surrounding another expansion continuing to grow, NFLPA executive director Lloyd Howell confirmed that the topic of 18 games in the regular season has been discussed at a “very high level” in June (via Mark Maske of The Washington Post).
While there doesn’t appear to be much opposition surrounding an 18th game, the concept of two bye weeks to accommodate the rest and recovery of players has been brought up. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow expressed his support of an extra bye during an April post on X.
If the league attempts to lengthen the regular season once again, adding a bye week could be a sticking point in discussions.
For now, teams appear to be content with the current bye week structure.
