New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr was reportedly fined this week for his end zone celebration after scoring a rushing touchdown in the Saints’ 44-19 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2.
According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, a source said Carr was fined $14,000 for the touchdown dance since he grabbed his crotch during it.
Carr’s dance was inspired by late pop megastar Michael Jackson, and the veteran quarterback told ESPN’s Katherine Terrell that his brothers encouraged him to do the dance after scoring a touchdown.
“People don’t know a lot of stuff about me. … Weddings or birthdays, I’m always dancing,” Carr said. “One time I hit the Michael Jackson and [my brothers] were like, ‘Bro, you have to do that if you score.'”
Although Carr has reportedly been fined for the celebration, game officials did not penalize him after he did it.
Once the fine becomes official, it will become only the second time on record that Carr has been fined by the NFL.
The first time occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and saw Carr get fined $15,000 for conduct detrimental to the league after he and several other Las Vegas Raiders players were photographed not wearing face coverings at a charity event.
Carr is in the midst of his second season with the Saints following his release by the Raiders at the conclusion of the 2022 campaign, and he is off to an ideal start.
Although Carr was solid last season in completing 68.4 percent of his passes for 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions, the Saints have the best offense in the NFL this season through two games.
Carr is completing 76.9 percent of his passing attempts for 443 yards, five touchdowns and one pick, plus he has rushed for a touchdown.
New Orleans is 2-0 with blowout victories over the Carolina Panthers and Saints, and its 45.5 points per game are the most in the NFL by an 11-point-per-game margin.
The 33-year-old Carr has been a quality quarterback during his career, earning four Pro Bowl selections and finishing third in NFL MVP voting in 2016, but he is looking better than ever through two games this season under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.
Fine notwithstanding, Carr is off to a nearly perfect start, and if he can keep it up, the Saints have a great chance to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
