The Patriots have the most money to spend this offseason, and it could lead them to pay a hefty price for free agents.
It was a reality head coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine and became apparent as New England’s options dwindled before the official start of free agency.
One player who could be on the franchise’s radar is Chris Godwin. According to Mike Giardi of the Boston Sports Journal, the veteran will be one of the most sought-after players on the market if he enters free agency. The NFL insider added that the Patriots are expected to be the “driver” of his market that could net Godwin a contract of $25 million per year.
That’s a hefty price for a player who’s coming off a season-ending ankle injury and has a history of other injuries. But New England is no longer a destination spot for top players, so it’s only leverage is offering the largest amount of money.
When healthy, Godwin is among the best wide receivers in the NFL and would help out Drake Maye in his sophomore season. The Patriots also reportedly are exploring the trade market with calls for A.J. Brown and curiosity in DK Metcalf.
