With running back Isiah Pacheco expected to miss six to eight weeks, the Kansas City Chiefs are eyeing a possible replacement in the backfield.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kansas City is bringing in Kareem Hunt for a visit on Tuesday. Hunt, a seven-year veteran, is currently a free agent and looking to find a landing spot.
He spent the first two years of his career with the Chiefs in 2017 and 2018 and was with the Cleveland Browns from 2019 to 2023.
Pacheco suffered a fibula injury during Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals, an injury that head coach Andy Reid said is “going to take a little bit of time.” While Kansas City would prefer to have its leading rusher from a year ago on the field all year, Hunt could be a solid fill-in for the time being.
He’s far from the running back he was in 2017 when he had 1,327 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, but he’s still been productive in recent years. Last season with the Browns, he had 411 rushing yards and a career-high nine touchdowns in 15 games.
Without Pacheco, the Chiefs’ running-back room is limited to undrafted rookie Carson Steele and veteran Samaje Perine, who Kansas City signed in late August.
In his first two games with the Chiefs, Steele has amassed 27 rushing yards on nine carries. Perine has seen limited action, picking up 13 receiving yards on two receptions but not recording a carry yet.
The eighth-year player spent the 2023 season with the Denver Broncos, where he totaled 238 rushing yards and a touchdown on 53 carries along with 455 receiving yards on 50 receptions.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire, another running back option, is on the non-football injury list and won’t be eligible to return until Week 5.
With the lack of depth in the backfield at the moment, signing Hunt could help fill a hole.
