The Indianapolis Colts will be without one of their top wide receivers for at least a few weeks.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Michael Pittman will be sidelined for multiple weeks because of a back injury. Schefter noted that injured reserve is an option for the fifth-year receiver.
Pittman led the Colts in both receiving yards (1,152) and receiving touchdowns (4) a year ago. So far this season, the former second-round pick has 22 receptions for 238 yards and a touchdown.
Along with Pittman, Colts receiver Josh Downs is dealing with an injury this week. Downs did not practice on Wednesday amid a toe injury he suffered on Sunday, though he is still listed as questionable for Suunday’s matchup. The second-year player has 173 receiving yards and a touchdown this year.
Luckily for Indianapolis, Alec Pierce has emerged as a solid target so far this season. The third-year receiver has 368 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 17 receptions. He’s already reached a career-high in touchdowns and is well on his way to having a career-high in receiving yards.
Pierce’s breakout year will certainly help ease the burden that comes with Pittman’s absence.
With Pittman out and Downs potentially out as well, the Colts will look for more production from Adonai Mitchell, a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft out of Texas. Mitchell hasn’t seen much action so far this year, bringing in six catches for 70 yards, but Sunday could give him the chance to have a breakout game.
