The Houston Texans reportedly worked out running back Cam Akers on Sunday.
Aaron Wilson of KPRC reported the news, though it’s unclear whether Akers is cleared for full contact. Akers suffered a torn Achilles during the 2023 season with the Minnesota Vikings.
The Vikings were reportedly expected to bring Akers back, pending health, but he remains unsigned.
Akers has suffered an Achilles tear to both his left and right legs since 2021. He rebounded with a solid season in 2022 coming off his first Achilles tear, rushing for 786 yards and seven touchdowns, but he’s yet to show the same explosiveness that made him a second-round pick in 2020.
On paper, the Texans don’t have much playing time to offer. Houston acquired Joe Mixon from the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason and has Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale returning as incumbents. Ogunbowale’s job as a third-down option feels safe, but Pierce has been inconsistent across his first two NFL seasons.
If Akers is ultimately brought in, it will likely be to compete with Pierce for the backup job in camp.
The Texans previously worked out Deon Jackson and Miyan Williams, so it’s clear the coaching staff feels a need to improve the depth chart—at least in terms of having camp bodies.
