ALLEN PARK — Dan Campbell got his wish, at least in the sense of knowing who the Detroit Lions will face in the divisional round when they return from the first-round bye on Monday.
The Lions will host the Washington Commanders (13-5) in the divisional round at 8 p.m. Saturday night from Ford Field.
Washington beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20 in a wild-card showdown Sunday night, with the late kick hitting the upright before going in at the buzzer.
Among the four potential opponents from the wild-card round, the Commanders are the team the Lions know the least about. Detroit swept the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings, and they also beat the Los Angeles Rams in the season opener (and in last year’s wild card).
The Lions and Commanders have not met since 2022, and a lot has changed for both since.
Still, Campbell said something he learned from his time with the New Orleans Saints when earning the first-round bye in 2018 was not to spend too much time preparing for someone you might not face. The Lions head coach wanted to give his players and coaching staff the weekend off, and then hit the ground running back in Allen Park on Monday.
“ … we’re going to know hopefully by Sunday night, and then we come in and we’ll know the opponent,” Campbell said last week. “Then we are full force on that, full game plan, we’ll know who we face.
“We’ve really faced all of these teams with the exception of — as far as this one coming up — Washington. We haven’t faced Washington this year so they would be the one that we – and we’ll work on breakdowns, we’ll have those, and then we’ll go from there.”

Washington beat the Buccaneers in a back-and-forth game on Sunday night from Tampa Bay. The Commanders are the NFL’s best fourth-down team, and they cashed in on a touchdown when they needed it most in the fourth quarter. They converted three times on five fourth-down tries in the wild-card round.
Tampa Bay tied the game with a late field goal. But Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels led the offense into field-goal range, with kicker Zane Gonzalez hitting the go-ahead field goal in the final minute. Daniels has remained clutch this season, milking Tampa of its timeouts in the final minute with broken tackles on the scramble and tough throws.
The Green Bay Packers were eliminated by the Philadelphia Eagles, losing 22-10 earlier Sunday. Green Bay was the No. 7 seed, while the Eagles will host a divisional-round game as the No. 2.
On the AFC’s side of the bracket, the Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens emerged from wild-card weekend. The top-seeded Kansas City Chiefs will host the Houston Texans, as MVP candidates clash in the Bills-Ravens showdown next weekend from Buffalo.
