Perhaps the most significant talking point of the Kansas City Chiefs offseason may be moot before free agency even starts.
Since the moment the Chiefs walked off the field after losing Super Bowl 59, all anyone’s wondered about is whether or not Travis Kelce will return next year.
Kelce is certainly no longer the offensive focal point that Chiefs fans have been used to over the past decade, but he can obviously still play and his value to the team next year (if he’s there, that is) isn’t really up for debate.
Still, the argument for retiring is a convincing one, especially considering the rumors that every media company that’s ever existed is patiently waiting to offer Kelce a lifetime contract. The player podcast money is good eatin’ – although probably no one knows that more than him – and it’s not like he has anything more to prove on the field.
According to a recent report, however, that’s not stopping him from leaning toward one more season. While making an appearance on The Rich Eisen show, The Athletic’s Senior NFL Writer Dianna Russini dropped some interesting info on how Kelce is reportedly thinking.
“There’s definitely a sense that Travis is going to try to play more,” Russini said. “I haven’t heard anyone saying ‘Yeah, he’s really struggling with what he wants to do.’ It’s definitely leaning more towards that. That can of course change… But for this Chiefs operation looking to move forward here, I think they feel pretty good that Travis has a little more left in him.”
Russini’s as plugged in as any NFL reporter, so it stands to reason that this is about as accurate a guess as you’re going to find on the internet these days. And for whatever this is worth, Russini’s report echoes what some of the Chiefs’ local reporters are saying too.
Ending your career on a Super Bowl loss – with some embarrassing tape from said loss, no less – is a rough way to go, so it’s not entirely surprising to hear that he’s got one more season in him.
Considering Kansas City’s front office reportedly wanted a decision sooner rather than later, it’s hard not to feel like we’re about to get one soon. The Chiefs still have a long way to go before they can be crowned offseason winners, which is obviously very important, but this would be a great start.
