The Pittsburgh Steelers‘ need for an impact wide receiver is no secret, but could they be in the market for a cornerback, also?
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, they might be. Graziano says that the Steelers “see themselves thin at that position” and that Pittsburgh doesn’t “have an obvious candidate to play the nickel corner role.”
“The Steelers could also be in the cornerback market, as they see themselves thin at that position,” Graziano wrote. “They have 2023 second-rounder Joey Porter Jr. and acquired Donte Jackson from Carolina in exchange for Diontae Johnson.
“But Cam Sutton, whom they signed after the Lions released him amid domestic violence allegations, is suspended for the first eight games of the season, and they don’t have an obvious candidate to play the nickel corner role.”
Pittsburgh’s need for cornerback help has become a yearly tradition at this point, but they might not be as bad off as Graziano lets on.
It’s true that Cameron Sutton will be out half the season, but Joey Porter Jr. and Donte Jackson should be a solid duo on the boundary, and Beanie Bishop has emerged as the favorite for the nickel corner role thanks to an outstanding training camp.
If Bishop’s strong offseason translates to success in the regular season and Sutton can get back as scheduled, the Steelers are going to have a really good situation at the position come the second half of the season.
If anything, the Steelers would benefit from adding another veteran depth option that can play inside and out, but nobody should be holding their breath for a significant addition, barring an injury to the current group.
