Mike Vrabel is underway in constructing his coaching staff as he takes over with the New England Patriots. That won’t include a number of coaches from Jerod Mayo’s staff.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport uncovered another leading coach that won’t return in a separate New England report about the franchise interviewing Chicago Bears interim head coach Thomas Jones for a “vacant” offensive coordinator position.
That means Alex Van Pelt’s run as New England’s offensive coordinator appears to be over. Van Pelt, who did not call plays in the same position with the Cleveland Browns, struggled as a play-caller but showed value in his development of rookie quarterback Drake Maye.
It’s hard to imagine Van Pelt returning in a lesser role or simply as a quarterbacks coach under Vrabel, even though that familiarity would greatly benefit Maye and the Patriots based on his improvements with fundamentals.
Josh McDaniels still circles as the likely favorite to fill the offensive coordinator spot in what would be another stint for the Patriots.
