Could the Patriots bring back an old friend this offseason in order to give Drake Maye a dependable pass-catching threat in 2025?
While the Patriots could pursue trades for star players like DK Metcalf or Cooper Kupp, former New England wideout Jakobi Meyers could hold plenty of appeal given both his familiarity in Foxborough and his reputation as a steady slot receiver who can move the chains.
And with Josh McDaniels now back in New England as the team’s offensive coordinator and the Raiders in a state of transition amid another disappointing season, Meyers could be a worthwhile trade target for the Patriots, according to NBC Sports Boston’s Phil Perry.
“Industry sources believe a former (Josh) McDaniels pupil in both New England and Las Vegas, Jakobi Meyers, could also be an option via trade. He’s going into the final year of his deal with the Raiders,” Perry wrote Monday.
Meyers may not have the same flash and ceiling of a Tee Higgins or a Metcalf. But the 28-year-old wideout would be welcomed on a New England roster seriously lacking in terms of consistent playmakers.
New England’s decision to let Meyers walk via free agency in 2023 has backfired severely — especially with the team’s replacement in JuJu Smith-Schuster only lasting one unproductive season in Foxborough.
While Smith-Schuster flamed out in New England, Meyers has reeled in 158 catches for 1,834 yards and 12 total touchdowns over his first two seasons with Las Vegas.
Despite having an unimpressive QB grouping of Gardner Minshew, Aidan O’Connell, and Desmond Ridder throwing to him in 2024, Meyers still racked up 1,027 receiving yards last season. New England has not had a wide receiver surpass 1,000 yards in a season since Julian Edelman in 2019.
Even though Meyers may not be the No. 1 wideout that New England desperately needs, bringing him aboard as a dependable route-runner and secondary option would be a solid pickup for a Patriots team that has to surround Maye with some talent moving forward.
