Bill Belichick won’t be on NFL sidelines as a head coach during the 2024 season, but he reportedly plans on returning to such a position after just one year away.
“Bill Belichick intends to coach in 2025,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero said as a guest host of The Rich Eisen Show (4:50 mark) on Tuesday. “He’s staying engaged in the game. He’s showing up to roasts. He’s now going to be on Inside the NFL. We’ve seen him showing up to different events.”
Pelissero also said, “He’s fully invested in he wants to coach again. He wants to pursue the all-time wins record. Those are things that really matter a lot to Bill Belichick.”
Don Shula holds the all-time record for coaching wins with 328, which is 26 victories ahead of Belichick’s mark of 302.
Yet the latter is arguably the greatest coach in NFL history with a resume that includes six Super Bowl titles, nine Super Bowl appearances and three Coach of the Year awards. He and Tom Brady helped orchestrate one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history during their partnership with the New England Patriots, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see another team give the coach a chance.
Still, he is available because he and the Patriots parted ways following a disappointing 4-13 season in 2023.
Missing on the Mac Jones draft pick set the franchise back, and it decided to move in a different direction for the 2024 campaign and beyond. No other team signed Belichick to be head coach during the offseason either, which left the legendary figure doing media to stay around the game.
Yet there will surely be multiple teams looking for new coaches in 2025, and the allure of a six-time Super Bowl champion who could set the all-time coaching record will be there for interested clubs.
And it seems like Belichick will be ready to jump at such a chance.
