The Washington Commanders’ hot start to the 2024 NFL season has earned head coach Dan Quinn respect around the league.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that NFL executives have commended Quinn for the work he has done with a roster that is not viewed among the league’s best.
“That’s not a great roster, particularly on defense, and they are pulling out wins impressively,” an NFL personnel man told Fowler. “Quinn is a great motivator with a ton of energy and is getting them to play above their talent level. I know Jayden [Daniels] has been great, but what Quinn is doing is really good.”
Another executive offered credit to offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and the work he has done since taking over this past offseason.
“I know it was easy to bag on [playcaller] Kliff Kingsbury, but he’s really good at creating space for his playmakers and getting easy completions for mobile quarterbacks who can use their legs on later downs,” a high-ranking personnel evaluator told Fowler.
Washington is currently 6-2 and leads the NFC East. That’s already a two-win improvement from 2023 and the Commanders are hoping to return to the postseason for the first time since 2020.
No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels has been a huge reason for the improvement, as he has thrown for 1,736 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions in his rookie season while also adding 424 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
Still, Quinn and Kingsbury have been able to help Daniels adjust quickly to the NFL game and help elevate the talent around him. Additionally, the Washington defense has allowed less than 20 points five times.
While the team still needs to string together several more wins to make the postseason, the early strides from Daniels and the team at large show that Quinn and the coaching staff are up to the task.
