It’s NFL combine week, which means the new league year and NFL draft are right around the corner.
The NFL combine is a four-day, invitation-only event that allows NFL scouts to evaluate the top draft-eligible college players on various criteria. There will be a mix of players in attendance, from those likely to be top picks, like Cam Ward and Travis Hunter, to players who aim to improve their draft stock with an impressive display this week.
This criterion includes mental, medical, and physical testing. The NFL combine events allow players to display their raw physical abilities in front of coaches and general managers of all 32 NFL teams.
The event has been held at Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Indianapolis Colts since 1987. Players have wowed scouts with incredible physical feats during the combine through the years, improving their draft stock along the way.
What are the NFL combine records for the 40-yard dash, bench press, and more?
The NFL began officially keeping track of the data and using an electronic timing system in 2006.
The fastest 40-yard dash record-holder is current Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy. He etched his name in the history books with a time of 4.21 seconds in 2024. Worthy set the record by just 0.01 seconds.
Here’s a complete list of the fastest 40-yard dash times in the NFL combine since 1999 (timing for the 40-yard dash began in 1999. Several players beforehand are not listed):
Stephen Paea set the bench press record at the 2011 combine with an impressive 49 reps of 225 pounds. The Chicago Bears drafted him in the second round. The New Zealand-born DT played seven seasons in the league.
According to the NFL combine official results, 16 players have reached 40 reps on the bench press over the last 25 years. Three active players are currently on the list:
In 2015, Byron Jones recorded a broad jump of 12 feet, 3 inches, breaking the world record by an inch. At the time, he destroyed the previous NFL combine record by 8 inches. Jones was drafted in the first round (No. 27 overall) by the Dallas Cowboys and played seven seasons in the NFL.
Wide receiver Chris Conley notched a 45-inch vertical jump in 2015 for the best in NFL combine history. Conley was a third-round pick by the Chiefs and is a member of the San Francisco 49ers. He’s never caught more than 47 passes in a season.
Brandin Cooks tied Jason Allen’s record in 2014 with a 3.81 20-yard shuttle time.
Cooks was drafted in the first round (No. 20 overall) by the New Orleans Saints in 2014. He has posted six 1,000-yard seasons in his 11 years in the NFL and was most recently a member of the Cowboys.
WR Jeffrey Maehl holds one of the longer-standing NFL Combine records, with a 6.42-second 3-cone set in 2011. He went undrafted and was signed as a free agent by the Texans. He played three seasons in the NFL.
