Green Bay Packers free safety Xavier McKinney, who was signed this offseason via the New York Giants, has already made a significant impact in his time with the green and gold. Through 12 games, McKinney has recorded seven interceptions, which ties the NFL lead in the stat with Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph.
The gravity of McKinney’s 2024 season is drawing the attention of more than just Packers fans, it seems, as the NFL announced on Monday that the free-agent signing currently leads free safeties in the league’s Pro Bowl fan vote. McKinney is the only top-3 player for Green Bay at their respective position in the vote, followed by running back Josh Jacobs (4th) — who was also signed by the Packers this spring.
Just behind Jacobs are two of the more surprising turnouts for the Packers: cornerback Jaire Alexander and linebacker Quay Walker. The only cornerbacks to rank above Alexander, who had a tough Week 1 showing against the Philadelphia Eagles and has played all of 10 snaps over the last five weeks, are Baltimore’s Marlon Humphrey, Denver’s Pat Surtain II, Pittsburgh’s Donte Jackson and Minnesota’s Byron Murphy.
The inside linebackers ahead of Walker are Baltimore’s Roquan Smith, Indianapolis’ Zaire Franklin, San Francisco’s Fred Warner, Washington’s Bobby Wagner and Las Vegas’ Robert Spillane. If you want a window into how bad linebacker is at the NFL level right now, Smith and Wagner are having down years relative to their career standards while Warner is currently playing through a fractured ankle.
