As if there wasn’t already constant quarterback controversy surrounding the Indianapolis Colts, a wild proposal has entered the mix.
Though the Colts want 22-year-old quarterback Anthony Richardson to take the reins fully in his third season, general manager Chris Ballard also understands there needs to be viable competition in the room.
In a long detail of the domino effect that could come from Sam Darnold’s free agency, Benjamin Solak of ESPN believes the Colts could be a sleeper team to trade for New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers — if the New York Giants are the ones to land Darnold.
“If there’s a sleeper team to become suddenly desperate for immediate quarterback help, it’s the Colts,” Solak wrote. “Rodgers is the splashiest name on the market and completely different stylistically from incumbent Anthony Richardson, which seems to be what the Colts want in their QB2. I’d bet good money that Steichen can design a solid offense around Rodgers — if Rodgers is willing to fit into the system.”
Despite his four MVP awards and future Hall of Fame resume, trading for Rodgers as he enters his age-41 season seems like a questionable move at best.
The Colts could technically take on his $23 million salary-cap hit with Richardson on his rookie contract, but giving up assets (likely draft capital) to make this move would be a desperation play at its finest.
In the season after tearing his Achilles, Rodgers completed 63% of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 90.5 passer rating. His passer rating was the lowest of his career since becoming a starter in 2008.
The Colts need to change up their approach this offseason if they want to end their four-year playoff drought, but it likely wont happen if this is the move they make.
