The Newark Catholic boys golf team extended its season Wednesday by the slimmest of margins and is making another trip to the Division III state tournament.
The Green Wave needed the fifth-man tiebreaker to secure its fifth consecutive district championship at Turnberry. NC and Mechanicsburg totaled 325 apiece, and Centerburg was right behind at 326.
Carter Hahn and Brogan Sullivan shot 79 apiece to tie for sixth individually. Bobby Kieber followed in 11th at 82, Charlie Doehring in a tie for 14th at 85 and Alex Nagel 17th at 86, finishing four strokes ahead of Mechanicsburg’s fifth score.
“Coaches talk all the time how every shot counts,” NC coach Phil West told Frank DiRenna of the Columbus Dispatch. “Alex Nagel, our five man, this is his first district. He’s never got to play here. That’s just huge that he was the difference-maker.”
NC plays Oct. 11 and 12 at NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury. The Green Wave returned just Sullivan and Kieber from last season’s state lineup when they took runner-up for the second consecutive season.
Liberty Christian’s MJ Glenn shot 86 to tie for 17th with Nagel.
Anthony Davis fired a 77 at Turnberry for Northridge to tie for sixth individually during the Division II district tournament.
Johnstown’s Will Taylor shot 83 to place 17th, and teammates Keaton Archibald in a tie for 18th at 84 and Maximus Mitchell in a tie for 23rd at 85 were next. Lakewood’s Gavin Kessler added an 87 to tie for 25th and Utica’s Jaxson Riggs 89 to tie for 28th.
