The New York Giants could be one step closer to finding their next starting quarterback after meeting with representatives of Matthew Stafford at the 2025 NFL Combine in Indianapolis this week.
The 37-year-old Stafford has been given permission by his current team, the Los Angeles Rams, to seek out a trade partner as the two sides are not likely to agree on a contract extension before the new league year begins on March 12.
The Giants and the Las Vegas Raiders appear to be among the front runners for Stafford’s services.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen could not comment on Tuesday during his session with the media because Stafford is still under contract with the Rams. But he did acknowledge that the team will “turn over every rock” to find solutions at quarterback this offseason.
“I’ve said it to you guys before. I think it’s the most important position in football. We have one on our roster right now, and I think that’s important wherever we address it that the play has to be better than what it’s been,” he said. “Because of injuries, we played four quarterbacks this year. We played three last year. So it would be nice to have one guy out there that can help you, give you the best chance to win games, and also stay healthy. Again, yeah, that is an important position, and we need better play out of that position than what we’ve had, and that will help us.”
The Giants believe they have the inside track to land Stafford even without surrendering the No. 3 overall selection in the 2025 NFL draft in any deal to get him. Earlier this month, the Giants signed Chad Hall, Stafford’s brother-in-law, to be their assistant quarterbacks coach.
