The Portland Thorns of the NWSL will soon get a new training center. And in a first-of-its-kind design, the team will share it with the WNBA expansion franchise awarded to Portland in a purpose-built, dual-sport performance center.
RAJ Sports, the investment platform for the Bhathal Family, owners and operators of Thorns FC and new WNBA team, say the facility design will feature an elite training core focused on the needs of female athletes and have a collaborative multi-team setting surrounding it.
“When we acquired the Portland Thorns and the Portland WNBA franchise our family committed to investing into the Thorns, the WNBA franchise and the Portland metro region,” says Lisa Bhathal Merage. “Building an innovative training facility that provides the best possible environment for our athletes across professional soccer and professional basketball will be a game changer for women’s sports. Our goal is to create the most inclusive and welcoming environment for our athletes, staff, supporters, fans, partners and community as we strive to be an elite organization on the field, on the court and in the community.”

Projects focused solely on women’s teams aren’t common in professional sports. The WNBA’s Seattle Storm have announced a dedicated training facility will open in 2024 and the NWSL’s Kansas City Current have a purpose-built stadium for its games.
Thorns forward Sophia Wilson, formerly Sophia Smith, says players are thrilled to be getting a dedicated center. “This kind of high-performance train facility allows us to elevate every part of our game, becoming better and more well-rounded athletes,” she says. “Having a space designed specifically for female athletes gives us yet another leg up on the competition and will be vital to our future successes.”
The site, a repurposing of an existing suburban office complex in Hillsboro, just west of Portland, was previously occupied by Nike. The campus plan includes a $150 million investment over multiple phases, with the first being the $75 million center for the two sports teams.
