Not much has gone right for the New Orleans Privateers this season. They’re 4-25 and 11th in the Southland Conference. They’ve lost 11 games in a row and with two games remaining on the regular season schedule, they’re threatening to finish this campaign on an unlucky 13-game losing streak.
Perhaps some of the Privateers’ struggles as of late have come because they’ve been playing since late January without four players, though: James White, Jah Short, Dae Dae Hunter and Jamond Vincent.
Those four players were suspended by the school after a New Orleans loss to Incarnate Word on Jan. 27, though at the time the university’s only statement on the matter was that the players had broken team rules. Which rules they broke exactly were unspecified.
It’s now being reported by Jeff Goodman of “The Field of 68” that the reason White, Short, Hunter and Vincent have been suspended is because of an ongoing school and NCAA investigation into the players for sports gambling.
The New Orleans men’s basketball team has held out four of its top five scorers since a Jan. 27 loss to UIW due to an investigation into sports gambling, sources told @TheFieldOf68.

ESPN’s David Purdum is also reporting that a betting ring currently under federal investigation had placed bets on at least two New Orleans games. Those games were a New Orleans loss to McNeese State on Dec. 28 as well as a Jan. 11 loss to Southeastern Louisiana.
Notably, Fresno State has just suspended two players and removed another from the basketball program amid a gambling investigation. ESPN is reporting that there are no ties between Fresno State and New Orleans, though.
White was New Orleans’ best player on the season, averaging 19.2 points and seven rebounds per game.
