A Texas school district’s hiring decision appears as though it will impact the leadership of both the Fayetteville and Fort Smith school districts.
The School Board of the Granbury (Texas) Independent School District voted unanimously Monday to name Courtney Morawski, assistant superintendent for teaching and learning for the Fayetteville School District, as the lone finalist for its superintendent job, according to a news release from the Granbury district.
Texas state law requires a 21-day waiting period following the naming of a lone finalist before a district can officially hire a superintendent, according to the release.
Granbury is about an hour west of Dallas. Morawski is a native of Mansfield, Texas, which is also in the Dallas area.
Morawski, 48, has been with the Fayetteville district since the start of the 2023-24 school year. She previously spent two years with the Bentonville School District and several years before that working for the Fort Smith School District as director of professional learning.
She was one of two finalists for the Prairie Grove superintendent’s job in 2023.
Morawski’s husband, Terry Morawski, is superintendent of the Fort Smith district.
“Dr. Terry Morawski will discuss a leadership transition with the Fort Smith Public Schools Board after Dr. Courtney Morawski’s position is finalized in January 2025,” said Allan Marshall, the Fort Smith district’s chief communications and engagement officer, in a statement released late Monday.
Terry Morawski, 49, joined the Fort Smith School District in 2017 as its chief operations officer. He later became deputy superintendent before being promoted to superintendent in January 2021.
In March, he received national superintendent certification from the American Association of School Administrators, one of 30 superintendents nationwide who completed the certification program this year, according to a Fort Smith district news release.
The Morawskis have been married for 25 years and have two sons, ages 21 and 19, according to the Granbury news release.
