MONTERREY, Mexico – The North Dakota State men’s golf team dominated the second day of the Monterrey Collegiate Classic at Club Campestre Monterrey, taking over the lead and winning by 10 strokes, placing four golfers inside the top 15.
The Bison closed the event with round scores of 280-280-278 to shoot -26, tied for the third best score to par in program history.
Rylin Petry led the way for NDSU, as he shot all three rounds under par with a 70-67-70 on the par-72 course to finish at -9. Petry finished in a tie for seventh overall. The 67 was a collegiate career best for Petry, topping a 68 earlier this season. His 54-hole total of 207 was also a new career low and his -9 was tied for the ninth best 54-hole tournament score in program history.
Josh Galvin finished two shots back of Petry at -7 for the event, after also firing all three rounds under par with round scores of 69-71-69. Galvin’s 209 was tied for 10th overall and also a career best 54-hole score for the senior, topping a 213 set last season.
Ian Simonich and Jake Skarperud also claimed top 15 finishes for the Bison after three rounds of par or better at the event. Simonich shot a 69-72-70, while Skarperud fired a 72-70-69. The duo finished at -5, in a tie for 14th overall.
The Bison fired a -10 round in the final round on Saturday, tied for the 13th best team round in school history. NDSU’s -26 matches the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate score set in October of 2019 for third best. The only other better tournament scores were a -40 and -28, both set last season.
Max Wilson, playing as an individual, finished in 51st in the 73-golfer field with a +7, while Gabe Benson shot a +8 to finish in 53rd.
The victory is the second of the fall for NDSU and the fifth top-3 finish in five events, as NDSU wraps up the semester with the conclusion in Mexico.
The Bison will return to action in mid-February with the Loyola Intercollegiate held at Palm Valley in Goodyear, Arizona on February 16-18.
