It’s a monumentous day on Twitter, as per the unofficial NBA Twitter guru Rob Perez, the NBA’s official Twitter account has been “community noted” for spreading misinformation for the first time in its history.
Notice how I can’t share the original post? Well, the NBA has been ratio’d so hard that they deleted the OP.
The post in question is of course the highlight of Trey Murphy’s “block” of Spencer Dinwiddie, which ended up costing the Mavericks a chance at winning the game in regulation. While it is obvious upon looking at the replay that this was clearly goaltending, the call was unable to be reviewed because goaltending was not called on the floor by the officiating crew. As per the NBA rulebook, goaltending and basket interference are reviewable plays only if the violation is called on the floor. Because it was not called in real time, there is nothing the Mavs could do here. Even if they had a timeout, you are unable to challenge a no call. Those factors make the non call that much bigger of a miss.
The NBA deserved to be checked on this one. It’s one thing to miss the call in real time, but it’s an entirely different to post it as a highlight and not even acknowledge the blatant thing that everyone who was following the game already knew.
However, as we’ve covered here on the site, that missed call was not the sole reason the Dallas Mavericks lost to the New Orleans Pelicans. The Mavs fourth quarter process on offense was terrible once again, as too many stagnant possessions led to the Pels finishing the game on a 21-11 run. It’s pretty bleak for the Mavs right now, but we can rest easy knowing that the NBA has finally been community noted. As a reminder, don’t forget to read the Last 2 Minute report tomorrow!
