Former Boston Celtics forward Anton Watson didn’t have to wait long to land his next NBA gig.
Just 48 hours after the Celtics waived the 2024 second-round pick, the New York Knicks claimed Watson on Tuesday, according HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. The deadline to sign a player to a two-way contract this season was Tuesday.
Watson never played for the Celtics, but made 21 appearance for Boston’s G League affiliate this season. The 6-foot-8, 225-pound Watson averaged 12 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists for Maine, but struggled with his outside shooting as he hit only 30.8% of his 3-point attempts.
The Celtics were encouraged by the Gonzaga product’s defensive potential when they drafted Watson and that could play well with the Knicks, who have a defensive-minded head coach in Tom Thibodeau.
“He’s already an NBA level defender,” Celtics assistant coach D.J. MacLeay told reporters following a Summer League game, per CLNS Media. “He’s got things he’s got to work on in that way on that side of the floor that we’re trying to help him with, but I think if he can prove he can knock down those shots and he shows a willingness to take them without a hesitation, he’s going to be a really good player for us. And he provides a lot of versatility because of his switchability and his ability to guard the basketball.”

Watson in all likelihood will be in a similar predicament with the Knicks that he was in with the Celtics. It will be a struggle for him to get playing time in the NBA with New York contending in the Eastern Conference.
The Celtics replaced Watson by signing Miles Norris, who was present at practice Tuesday.
