The New York Knicks are reportedly adding depth to their backcourt by bringing back a veteran guard.

Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Knicks have agreed to a deal with guard Landry Shamet, who spent the preseason with the team before suffering a shoulder injury that caused him to be waived. New York announced that it waived forward Matt Ryan in a corresponding move.

Charania noted that Shamet “was considered a lock to make the regular season roster prior to” suffering a dislocated shoulder in a preseason game. He spent the last week playing for the Knicks’ G League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks, and averaged 11 points per game.

A seven-year veteran, Shamet was the No. 26 pick in the 2018 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. He was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers during his rookie season, and he also played for the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns before spending the 2023-24 campaign with the Washington Wizards. He has a career average of 8.7 points while shooting 38.5 percent from beyond the arc, and he’s also a strong defender who can guard multiple positions.

Shamet is joining a Knicks team that is ranked third in the Eastern Conference with an 18-10 record. New York has won each of its last three games and is ranked seventh in offense with 116.5 points per game and sixth in defense with 109.4 points allowed per game. The team will be back in action on Monday against the Toronto Raptors (7-21).

Ryan appeared in nine games for the Knicks this season and averaged 1.7 points in limited action. He’s also played for the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves and New Orleans Pelicans during his four-year career.
