Following the earth-shattering trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis early Sunday morning, the Lakers have been thrown into an interesting predicament regarding their four-time NBA champion and league MVP LeBron James.
Now that Dončić has become the newest face of the Lakers’ franchise, James’ relationship with the organization may have taken a hit, especially considering that the 21-time All-Star was reportedly unaware that the team chose to take part in what may be the most shocking trade in sports history.
Since the focus of the franchise has now shifted to supplying Dončić with opportunities to succeed in the coming decade, plenty of speculation has poured in regarding James’ status with the team.
Even some of the league’s most respected figures have been supportive of a trade involving James, including 11-time All-Star power forward and Hall-of-Fame inductee Charles Barkley.
During an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up, the legendary player offered his thoughts on where James should land if he were to demand a trade in the coming days.
“I’d actually, to be honest with you, I’d swing for the Warriors,” Barkley shared Monday morning.
“First of all, it would be must-watch television to see Steph [Curry] and LeBron play together … I think the Warriors would be fascinating, because, listen, Steph and LeBron together, people have been talking about it for years.”
James teaming up with a fellow four-time NBA champion in Curry has been rumored for some time, though recent developments could improve the likelihood that a trade may be facilitated between Los Angeles and the Golden State Warriors.
The duo of James and Curry took home an Olympic gold medal for their efforts in Paris, France this past summer, defeating the world’s best competition on their way.
This showed how truly dominant the legendary duo could be in a serious setting with a title on the line, only further motivating the basketball world to conceptualize a timeline where the two would join forces in the NBA.
If the two were to team up, the Lakers would possibly look to gain plenty of young assets and draft capital from the Warriors to make up for dealing Max Christie and a first round draft selection to the Dallas Mavericks in the Dončić-Davis swap.
Los Angeles could seek players like Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody and more on top of substantial draft compensation to pull off a successful transaction.
