The Brooklyn Nets as a franchise are in the position where they are rebuilding, but should have enough flexibility in terms of building the roster how they see fit for the near future. While Brooklyn is one of the teams that are heavily invested in the Draft, they could also be major players in free-agency next season as well.
Per Jake Fischer during his stream on Bleacher Report, the Nets are one of two teams as of right now that are reportedly interested in going after Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga in free-agency next offseason. Granted, Brooklyn could in play for a number of players given that they will be one of just a few teams expected to have a lot of cap space to use.
“There’s already been rumblings of Brooklyn willing to throw a big offer sheet at Jonathan Kuminga, I heard (New Orleans Pelicans forward) Trey Murphy’s name before he got locked up,” Fischer said during his livestream. “Just keep the Nets on your radar for that type of move because (Brooklyn general manager) Sean Marks’ staff did this in the past.”
With Kuminga not signing his rookie-scale extension with the Warriors prior to the deadline to do so earlier this month, he will be a restricted free-agent next offseason, meaning that he won’t be completely free to acquire in free-agency. Per Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area, the reason that Kuminga and Golden State were unable to come to terms on an extension is because Kuminga wants at least $30 million per season.
While Kuminga is a rising star in the NBA, it’s fair to wonder how good he will be if the Warriors weren’t willing to secure his future with the team before the deadline. If the Nets end up being one of the teams in pursuit of Kuminga in free-agency next summer, they may not have much of a shot at getting him if he takes the next step that Golden State wants to see from him. If he doesn’t, would Brooklyn want to pay him $30 million per year knowing that?
