The NBA trade deadline is on Feb. 6, which is about a month away.
The Dallas Mavericks are well aware of that, as they’ve been “one of the most active teams on the phone this trade season,” according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. He noted Maxi Kleber ($11 million) and Quentin Grimes ($4 million) as players who have a market.
Windhorst also noted that general manager Nico Harrison was aggressive at last year’s trade deadline when he acquired Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington. Both proved to be instrumental parts of the Mavs’ improbable NBA Finals run.
But now the Mavericks find themselves in an unforeseen situation after learning that Luka Doncic is likely out through all of January and Kyrie Irving is out at least 1-2 weeks with a lumbar back sprain.
Dallas has dropped its last five games and still has matchups with the Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets (twice), Oklahoma City Thunder (twice), Minnesota Timberwolves, and Boston Celtics ahead of them this month.
Any slippage in the standings could jeopardize the Mavs’ chances of going deep this postseason, so they might not have the luxury of waiting until Feb. 6 to make any meaningful upgrades. The Mavs have been linked to Jimmy Butler, as Grimes and/or Kleber’s contracts may help the two parties manufacture a deal.
Kleber’s contract would likely need to be attached with a draft asset or be a salary filler to help the Mavs bring in a player on a big contract.
Because the Mavs only have two tradable first- and second-round picks, the latter seems more likely.
