The Dallas Mavericks can’t take back the Luka Doncic trade. It’s done, and now what happens next is trying to build the best team around Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving.
The Mavericks are a quality playoff team at full strength. Still, they will likely want more star power to increase their chances of returning to the NBA Finals and possibly winning a championship.
After the Doncic trade, Jimmy Butler was floated as a trade target for Dallas. If they really want to go all in, Kevin Durant could also be a target, even if that doesn’t sound realistic. However, neither are reportedly on their radar.
Jake Fischer reported on The Stein Line that though Dallas is searching for more talent upgrades, their side has no interest in Butler or Durant.
“The Mavericks are not pursuing Butler or Durant, according to league sources, although Dallas is definitely not done looking for upgrades on the trade market after acquiring Anthony Davis,” Fischer wrote.
Fischer added that teams have inquired about Durant following the Suns’ struggles. Phoenix has rejected every offer, but they have listened.
Anyway, trading for either of them would be difficult financially because both are two of the top 11 most expensive contracts in the NBA. The Mavericks would sacrifice plenty of depth just to get one of them. Phoenix is dealing with the consequences of sacrificing depth for stars, so Dallas might not want to deal with the same thing.
Fischer’s report indicates that the Mavericks know they need more than Davis and Irving to compete in the postseason. Their target might be a star like Durant or Butler, or a considerably cheaper star. The next few days will reveal what comes next for the reigning Western Conference Champions.
