After losing in the second round of the NBA playoffs last season to the Boston Celtics, the Cleveland Cavaliers have bounced back and are the hottest team in the NBA. At 11-0, they are the only undefeated team left in the league and have statement wins over the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors, among others.
It’s hard to argue that Cleveland isn’t a legitimately good team, if not the very best in the league. Granted, as of Nov 11, only two of the 10 different teams they have played are above .500, but the Cavs have made easy work of the teams they have faced.
After 11 games, Cleveland is first in points per game, first in field goal and 3-point percentage, first in offensive rating, eighth in defensive rating, and is tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for first in net rating.
While they will fall back to Earth at some point, it is very realistic that they enter the playoffs as the number one seed in the East. However, with the Boston Celtics gunning to repeat as champions, seeding doesn’t really matter. One expert is not convinced that this run is sustainable.
“They’re such a conflicting bunch, almost intrinsically limited, but also so clearly skilled enough to erase every fair doubt about the roster’s incompatibility,” wrote The Ringer’s Michal Pina on Monday. “At the same time, falling in the first round to the (Philadelphia 76ers), (Milwaukee) Bucks, (Orlando) Magic or any other injury-riddled team that’s struggled out of the gate doesn’t seem far-fetched, either.”
Assuming that the Magic, Bucks, Sixers, Heat, Knicks and Indiana Pacers manage to find their footing, the Cavs will have more than just Boston to contend with. Still, as of now, it’s hard to see Cleveland as anything other than a juggernaut.
