Sacramento Kings vs. Chicago Bulls

The Kings are not a great team when it comes to the early game action. They rank 22nd in first bucket success rate and are even worse (27th) in tipoff win percentage. However, they are by far better than the Bulls in each of those categories. Despite being one of the worst teams in the league on the jump, they have a 20.8% better win percentage than Chicago. It’s more of the same with the first scorer conversions where they hold a 17.7% lead over the Bulls. The numbers we see for the Bulls are bad enough to be an auto-fade, even if the Kings aren’t particularly strong on this front.

If we check out the recent shot logs from Sacramento, it’s all about two players. Malik Monk and DeMar DeRozan have been pretty much all of the early shots lately. If you take the first three shots from the Kings in the last three games, those two have taken 77.8% of those shots. They’ve also combined to take 100% of the team’s first shots. With DeRozan facing off against his prior squad, I like him in a revenge game-type situation.

The home squad in this one should have a huge advantage when it comes to scoring first. The Cavaliers and Jarrett Allen have been the best team in the league on the tip. They’re getting the first possession 83.8% of the time, and with the tip winner getting just a touch over 65.0% of the first buckets, that already gives them a huge head start. It’ll also help that the Pacers aren’t particularly good at winning the tip (just 41.0%) or converting those wins into first buckets (46.2%). As a result, we’ll grab a player from Cleveland for Sunday.

Only one player shows up in the shot log for the first three shots in each of the Cavaliers’ last two games. Darius Garland has only four first buckets on the year, but is really seeing a lot of early chances. It’ll also help that six out of the last seven first buckets the Pacers have surrendered have been to opposing guards.
