Klay Thompson had an up and down game in the Dallas Mavericks’ contest against the Denver Nuggets.
Whatever he achieves during the remainder of his career, Klay Thompson will go down as a NBA legend.
Thompson once hit a 37-point quarter, something not even Wilt Chamberlain managed, and continues to thrive for the Dallas Mavericks.
He led the Mavs against the Nuggets on January 12, with the team missing star player Luka Doncic through injury.
And Thompson put up the type of performance that rolled back the clock – for three quarters.
Klay Thompson led the scoring for the Mavericks, who were also missing Kyrie Irving against a full strength Nuggets side.
The Mavs led after three quarters, and Thompson was the story of the game, going 6-12 from three point range, scoring 25 points in total.
And this led to NBA fans on social media all asking why the Golden State Warriors let him go in the first place.
The Warriors have had a desperately poor season, with a very middling 19-19 record, having begun 12-3.
Thompson’s big performance sparked a discourse that turns a spotlight on a team struggling to hold onto a Western Conference play-in berth.
“The Warriors really let Klay go lmaooooo,” wrote one fan, while another noted: “Imagine Klay Thompson on the Warriors.”
A third wrote: “Klay been going crazy all game I’m so glad Warriors gave up on him cause Dallas won’t.”
Another fan wrote: “Klay Thompson has been exactly what the Warriors have been missing and exactly what Dallas needed. Don’t need prime Klay just need a reliable shooting.”
And another added: “Warriors really fumbled by letting Klay Thompson just walk….. Klay really going off against the Nuggets.”
One more asked: “Warriors fans who said Klay was the problem last year, how are you feeling rn????”
More viral posts mocked the Warriors decision with memes attached…
Klay Thompson’s night saw him set an impressive milestone, in a career packed with them.
He eclipsed the 16,000 career point barrier, moving him above Amar’e Stoudemire in the all-time list to 125th all time.
Had he not missed long stretches of his post-peak Warriors run with injury, Thompson’s career points total would be a lot higher.
With the Dallas Mavericks cruising towards a win, the Denver Nuggets managed to haul them back in.
Part of this was a strong defensive effort that shut Klay Thompson out entirely in the fourth quarter.
Thompson had 25 points at the end of the third, and that was how his game ended, with the Nuggets putting up a huge 33-12 fourth quarter.
The Mavs star had one good look from a three which did not go down, before the Nuggets went down the other end of the court and took a lead that they did not relinquish, winning 112-101.
Even with Nikola Jokic only managing 19 points, the Nuggets bench stepped up, while Dallas were just too short-handed.
Thompson’s performance was a big one, the type of showing the Warriors need right now – but it wasn’t quite enough to see off Denver.
