The Celtics don’t need to make a trade to bolster their 2025 NBA championship hopes. Boston won it all with its current group last season, and there’s no reason to believe Jayson Tatum and company can’t do it again this summer.
However, that doesn’t mean the reigning champions shouldn’t make a trade before Feb. 6.
While the C’s roster doesn’t need improvement, their finances could stand to be straightened out a bit. As ESPN’s Bobby Marks noted in a column published Tuesday, Boston currently is slated to pay a $65.6 million luxury tax penalty. However, over $15 million of that bill could be removed if the Celtics traded Jaden Springer, a seldom-used player on Joe Mazzulla’s bench.
Thus, Marks proposed a trade that would send Springer, a 2025 first-round pick and a 2030 second-rounder to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for forward Toumani Camara.
“In any potential Springer trade, the Celtics should be thinking about how they can add a wing who guards multiple positions while also saving money,” Marks wrote. “Camara is averaging 9.6 points and ranks in the 85th percentile in steals among wings, per Cleaning the Glass.

“The Celtics are projected to spend close to $500 million next season and Camara gives them an inexpensive option. He has a $2.2 million non-guaranteed salary next season and $2.4 million team option in 2026-27. The Trail Blazers would acquire Springer with part of their $6.9 million trade exception.”
Trading Springer also would have potential team-building benefits. As Marks pointed out, the Celtics currently would not be able to sign a waived player with a preexisting salary of $12.8 million since they’re over the second apron. But by trading Springer, two roster spots would open in Boston.
Again, Brad Stevens and company shouldn’t bend over backward to make the kind of move Marks suggested. But if the opportunity presents itself, it could help the Celtics in a variety of ways.
