Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka crashed out of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells on Wednesday after a first-round 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Colombia’s Camila Osorio.
Osaka was back on court at the WTA 1000 event nearly a month after withdrawing from the Australian Open in the third round with an abdominal strain.
The 27-year-old, who retired due to the same issue from the Auckland final in January, was under pressure early on against Osorio and had to fend off two break points in her second service game.
She held on for 4-4 before Osorio used defending to set up finishing plays and drew errors from Osaka to break for a 5-4 lead. The Colombian reached a set point when a net cord ball clipped the outside of the sideline and converted that chance after Osaka missed a return.
In the second set, Osorio held a match point on Osaka’s serve at 5-3 before serving for the match at 5-4. With the result, she became the first Colombian woman to defeat a former world No. 1. It was also her maiden victory at Indian Wells.
“Worst match I’ve ever played in my life,” Osaka, who won the title at Indian Wells in 2018, wrote on Threads. “Wow, I’m so sorry to everyone who watched that.”
Speaking to reporters at a press conference later, 56th-ranked Osaka said: “I don’t think it was too good on my end.
“There were certain things that felt extremely off because I could only start to practice serving after a certain amount of time and stuff like that. So I think given the situation, it wasn’t that terrible.
“I don’t feel like I played well at all, but I had chances to be in the match.”

The four-time Grand Slam champion, who has had a rollercoaster season, tried to draw positives from her defeat.
“Firstly, I’m not injured,” she said. “I feel really good, which is, I guess, a positive to take out of this. Secondly, it feels really weird because I do think I did well in Australia. It feels like a little bit of a stopping or starting again.”
However, she added that her struggles feel like “a little bump” in her journey, having returned to court last year after a 15-month maternity break following the birth of her daughter Shai.
“When I think about last year, I feel completely fine right now because it just feels like a little bump in the road. I’ll be back in Miami and hopefully, I’ll have way more serve practice under my belt and things like that,” she said, referring to the March 18-30 WTA 1000 event.
For 23-year-old Osorio, who celebrated the victory with some dance movies, it was a “dream come true”.
“First, good evening everyone, I’m Camila Osorio,” the 52nd-ranked player said with a laugh in an on-court interview.
“It’s crazy for me, it’s a dream come true. I really wanted to play on this court and was really excited and looking forwards to playing a champion like Naomi, so I can’t believe it.”
