The spotlight may be on young guns Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner heading into the 2025 Australian Open, but Lorenzo Musetti has a stark warning for those overlooking Novak Djokovic. Despite being 37 years old, Djokovic’s unparalleled experience and proven dominance at Melbourne Park make him a force to be reckoned with in the battle for Grand Slam glory.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have risen as the ATP Tour’s brightest stars, with both showcasing extraordinary talent and resilience. Alcaraz has captured two of the last three Grand Slam titles, while Sinner enters the Australian Open as the defending champion after a historic 2024 season.
However, as Musetti points out, their combined accomplishments at Melbourne pale in comparison to Djokovic’s staggering record. The Serbian legend has won the Australian Open 10 times, clinched 94 victories at the tournament, and boasts more titles in Melbourne than Alcaraz and Sinner have combined wins.
Though Djokovic didn’t claim a Grand Slam title in 2024, his Olympic gold medal proved that he’s still a powerhouse on the global stage. Musetti emphasized that Djokovic’s mastery of high-pressure matches and familiarity with the unique conditions of Melbourne Park make him a looming threat to the younger generation.
“Novak will always be competing for Grand Slams if his physical condition is stable. He is a danger for everybody – for Jannik, for Sascha, and for Carlos Alcaraz,” Musetti said during an interview with the South China Morning Post.
Sinner’s incredible 2024, marked by his Australian Open triumph and consistent dominance, has positioned him as the player to beat. However, Musetti believes Djokovic’s wealth of experience on Grand Slam courts could tip the scales.
“Last year, Jannik showed he was one step ahead of everyone else, he had such an incredible season. But Novak is always dangerous, and he knows a little bit about how to play on those Grand Slam courts and in those conditions,” Musetti warned.
Musetti, who reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2024, is eager to build on his Grand Slam success. The 22-year-old has set an ambitious goal for 2025: reaching the second week at every major tournament, starting with improving his past underwhelming Australian Open performances.
“Wimbledon gave me a lot of confidence for the Slams. My best Australian Open result is the second round, and I know I can do better this year,” Musetti said. “I have the confidence to achieve my goal of going to the second week of every Slam.”
As the 2025 Australian Open looms, the battle for supremacy between youth and experience promises to be thrilling. With Alcaraz and Sinner aiming to continue their meteoric rise, Djokovic remains a wildcard that no one can afford to ignore. Musetti’s insights serve as a reminder that while new stars shine brightly, legends like Djokovic still have the power to rewrite the script.
