A pair of state champions moved to No. 1, marking the only changes to top-ranked teams in this week’s ASWA high school basketball rankings.
Mountain Brook has advanced to the boys championship game 10 of the past 12 seasons in either Class 6A or Class 7A, winning six titles during the span. The Spartans secured Class 6A No. 1 for the first time this season after knocking off both previous top-ranked teams – Clay-Chalkville and Huffman – over the past week.
Trinity earned the past two Class 3A girls state championships, but moved up to Class 4A and has been ranked No. 2 for the previous polls this season. A convincing win by Madison Academy over previous top-ranked and defending class champion Good Hope elevated Trinity to No. 1, followed by Madison Academy at No. 2.
Other No. 1 boys teams are Class 7A Hoover, Class 5A Ramsay, Class 4A Fairfield, Class 3A Midfield, Class 2A Section, Class 1A Spring Garden and AISA Valiant Cross
Girls No. 1 teams remaining atop the poll are Class 7A Hoover, Class 6A Park Crossing, Class 5A Scottsboro, Class 3A Lauderdale County, Class 2A Decatur Heritage, Class 1A Spring Garden and AISA Springwood.
The Hoover boys continue to climb in national rankings, moving up to No. 7 in this week’s MaxPreps Top 100, while ASWA third-ranked Huntsville is No. 34, up from No. 38, and ASWA second-ranked Central-Phenix City is No. 59, up from No. 63.
Hoover (22-0) and Spring Garden (20-0) are the only undefeated boys teams among the rankings. AISA Springwood (14-0) is the only unbeaten girls No. 1 team while Class 7A second-ranked Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (23-0), Class 1A fourth-ranked Kinston (19-0) and AISA second-ranked Clarke Prep (13-0) are the other ranked girls teams without a loss.
