The Moody College of Communication will offer a new sports production and broadcasting minor in collaboration with Texas Athletics starting Fall 2025, according to a Feb. 11 news release.
The 15-credit minor is open to students of any major. Applications for the minor will open in August, and students must have completed an introductory course before applying, according to the college’s website. The program will introduce new classes and give students access to the facilities and the experienced staff of Texas Athletics while pursuing the minor, said Cassandre Alvarado, the senior associate dean of Undergraduate Education at Moody College.
The college currently offers sports production and broadcasting introductory courses and will be “rolling into” upper-division courses in the next few semesters, including a sports storytelling class and advanced production and broadcasting courses, Alvarado said.
The program focuses on “hands-on learning,” much like film school, said Ali Forbes, a radio-television-film professor of practice. She said she expects the collaboration will position UT’s sports production and broadcasting program to become one of the best in the country. The experience of developing “tangible skills” by working in the field will make students an asset to professional organizations and create a “clear path between graduation and employment,” she said.
“This program is going to grow very quickly, and we’re really lucky to be here at this time,” Forbes said.
Journalism freshman Adamaris Olivares-Lopez said she mainly chose to attend UT to explore the sports side of journalism, and she is excited to pursue the sports production and broadcasting minor.
“Even if we’re the guinea pigs for future generations that are able to go through that minor, it would be great,” Olivares-Lopez said.
