Two Grade 1 winners who last raced at the Breeders’ Cup, Gold Phoenix and Candied, worked Monday.
Gold Phoenix drilled five furlongs on the all-weather training track at Santa Anita in a minute flat. It was his sixth work since coming back to the tab on Jan. 27. The Phil D’Amato trainee won at the top level in 2023 in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1), and most recently chased home for fourth behind Rebel’s Romance in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar.
Candied, who most recently ran third behind horse of the year Thorpedo Anna in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, also worked Monday. She went an easy four furlongs at trainer Todd Pletcher’s Palm Beach Downs base in 51.5 seconds. It was her second work back since the Breeders’ Cup.
These eight graded-stakes winners worked across the country Monday morning:
Candied (Candy Ride), a Grade 1 winner (2023 Alcibiades), worked four furlongs in 51.5 seconds at Palm Beach Downs on Monday morning. It was the slower of two works at the distance. Her previous work was seven days ago going three furlongs at Palm Beach Downs. In her last start, she placed third in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff going 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Del Mar on Nov. 2 for trainer Todd Pletcher.
Gold Phoenix (Belardo), a Grade 1 winner (2023 Frank E. Kilroe Mile), worked five furlongs in 1:00.0 at Santa Anita on Monday morning. It was the fourth fastest of nine works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going five furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start, he placed fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf going 1 1/2 miles on the turf at Del Mar on Nov. 2 for trainer Phil D’Amato.
Poster (Munnings), a Grade 2 winner (2024 Remsen), worked five furlongs in 1:01.8 at Turfway Park on Monday morning. It was the fastest of three works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going five furlongs at Turfway Park. In his last start, he placed third in the Sam F. Davis going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 8 for trainer Eoin Harty.
Balnikhov (Adaay), a three-time Grade 3 winner (2024 Dinner Party, 2023 San Francisco Mile, 2022 Bryan Station), worked five furlongs in 59.4 seconds at Santa Anita on Monday morning. It was the third fastest of nine works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going four furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start, he placed 10th in the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1) going 1 1/8 miles on the turf at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 25 for trainer Phil D’Amato.
Deterministic (Liam’s Map), a three-time Grade 3 winner (2024 Hill Prince, 2024 Virginia Derby, 2024 Gotham), worked five furlongs in 1:03.0 at Payson Park on Monday morning. It was the seventh fastest of 11 works at the distance. His previous work was 16 days ago going five furlongs at Payson Park. In his last start, he won the Hill Prince (G3) going 1 1/8 miles on the turf at Aqueduct on Nov. 9 for trainer Christophe Clement.
Hope Road (Quality Road), a two-time Grade 3 winner (2024 Bayakoa, 2024 Torrey Pines), worked five furlongs in 1:01.8 at Santa Anita on Monday morning. It was the eighth fastest of 19 works at the distance. Her previous work was nine days ago going four furlongs at Santa Anita. In her last start, she placed second in the Santa Monica (G2) going seven furlongs on the main track at Santa Anita on Feb. 1 for trainer Bob Baffert.
Tawny Port (Pioneerof the Nile), a two-time Grade 3 winner (2022 Ohio Derby, 2022 Lexington), worked five furlongs in 1:04.2 at Payson Park on Monday morning. It was the 10th fastest of 11 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going five furlongs at Payson Park. In his last start, he placed sixth in the Sycamore (G3) going 1 1/2 miles on the turf at Keeneland on Oct. 11 for trainer Christophe Clement.
Getaway Car (Curlin), a Grade 3 winner (2024 Best Pal), worked four furlongs in 50.2 seconds at Santa Anita on Monday morning. It was the 38th fastest of 51 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start, he won the Sunland Park Derby going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Sunland Park on Feb. 16 for trainer Bob Baffert.
